Windows Terminal description and review

Windows Terminal is a new, modern, feature-rich, productive terminal application for command line users. It includes many of the most requested by the Windows command line community, including support for tabs, rich text, globalization, configurability, themes and styles, and more.

The Terminal will also need to meet our goals and measures to ensure that it is kept fast and efficient, and that it does not consume large amounts of memory or power.

The Windows console host, conhost.exe, is the original Windows command line user experience. It implements the Windows command line infrastructure and is responsible for hosting the Windows console API, input engine, rendering engine, and user preferences. The console host code in this repository is the actual source from which conhost.exe is built on Windows.

The primary goal of the console is to remain backward compatible with existing console subsystem applications.

Since taking ownership of the Windows command line, the team has added several new ones to the console, including window transparency, line-based selection, support for ANSI / virtual terminal sequences, 24-bit color, a pseudo-console (“ConPTY”), and more.

However, because the main goal of the console is to maintain backward compatibility, we have not been able to add many of the ones that the community has been requesting and that we have wanted to add for the past few years, such as tabs!

These limitations led us to create the new Windows Terminal.

By reviewing the console, we have significantly modernized its code base. We’ve cleanly separated logical entities into modules and classes, introduced some key extensibility points, replaced several old homegrown collections and containers with more secure and efficient STL containers, and simplified the code by using Microsoft’s WIL header library. .
