Who Can Use description and review
What is WhoCanUse?
It is a tool that attracts attention and understanding of how color contrast can affect different visually impaired people. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines cover a wide range of recommendations for making web content more accessible. Only a small part of making the web more accessible is accommodating people with a form of blindness or low vision. The standard grading system is a great start, but I thought I’d try to humanize the people who are affected by the different grades. ….
Where did you get the information from?
Percentages are from colour-blindness.com and Vision Australia.
Your math is wrong, doesn’t it add up to 100%?
Good eyes! The population data provided are estimates of individual disabilities and do not cover the large number of visual impairments in the world. This is to give you not only an understanding of how color contrast affects different people, but also who it can affect.
I am fascinated by how this works, can you tell me more?
Of course! There are a few stages to get to this point. We first find out the contrast between two HEX values. For this we are using a plugin called Chrome.JS, this does the heavy lifting for us. Once we have the ratio (and using the font size and weight) we can apply a grade to that specific color scheme.
For color blind options we are using another plugin aptly named for Color Blindness which converts our HEX codes into codes that would be seen by people with different disabilities, then we can apply our same process to get the color ratios and determine your rating. For cataracts, glaucoma, low vision, and situational events, I have personally created simulations to help identify your rating.
What does a failing grade mean?
The classification uses a combination of contrasting color, size, and weight of the text. A glitch simply means that the color scheme offers some visual tension to the viewer and should be avoided if possible.
