TENORI-ON description and review
*** iOS5.0 or later is required. ***
The iOS version of the world-renowned TENORI-ON offers you a completely new musical interface. Even if you don’t know much about music, you can intuitively create music as if you were organizing sounds in space. The music you see on the 16 × 16 button grid is the music that is being played.
In the 16 × 16 button grid basically the horizontal direction is time and the vertical direction is pitch. By placing sounds on these buttons, you can combine rhythms and melodies to produce music. A button will glow when its sound is produced. The movements of the bright lights produce a visual spectacle.
TNR-i can produce 16 types of sounds at the same time (16 layers) and can recall up to 16 song patterns produced with those sounds (16 blocks). By switching between song patterns in real time, you can produce a rich variety of musical expressions. There are six different types of rendering modes that you can select for each layer. You can make elaborate music by combining different modes. In Scoring mode, the most fundamental of the modes, you can arrange sounds horizontally (temporarily) and vertically (by pitch). In exciting shuffle mode, the sounds you arrange aren’t just played in order, the melody and rhythm constantly change as turns are added. In drawing mode, you can play music by swiping your finger across the buttons as if drawing a picture. In bounce mode, the bright lights are like balls that bounce and produce sound when they fall. In tap mode, you can continuously change the sound as you play. In solo mode, which is fun for solo performances, you can easily adjust the repeat rate and pitch.
First, test the demo. You can experience the joy of performance simply by changing layers. – Demo Upload: From the menu (tap the screen), tap All Blocks, iD-Xtra_uncTK and then Upload. – Layer switching: press R5 and the area where the 16 × 16 buttons are at the same time. (You can double tap R5 to keep it and make it easy to change layers.)
The appeal of TNR-i is not limited only to its faithful duplication of the TENORI-ON concept and its design and interface, which were developed under the supervision of Toshio Iwai. If you are connected to a network, you can participate in TNR -i sessions with distant friends and others. Up to four people can connect with each other over a network and enjoy performing together at the same time. First, tap Clear and the screen at the same time to activate Game Center. Then invite your friends or use auto-matching to automatically select a partner and log in. For more details, see page 23 of the internal manual. Manual: From the menu (touch the screen), touch System Menu and then Handbook.
If you upgrade the TENORI-ON (TNR-w or TNR-o) to version 2.1 and use it with TNR-i, you can participate in sessions using the TENORI-ON (TNR-w or TNR-o). consult the TENORI-ON website at http://www.global.yamaha.com/tenori-on/ .
The preset sounds of TNR-i are the same as those of TENORI-ON, and performance files are also supported. You can use iTunes to transfer performance files saved on your TENORI-ON SD card to TNR-i. Of course, the reverse is also possible.
Enjoy the world of TENORI-ON.
Notes * Game Center is a network provided by Apple. It is mainly used for multiplayer games. You must have an Internet connection to participate in a network session. You also have to log into Game Center. * User Voice is not available. * To run TNR-i smoothly, we recommend using an iPhone 4 or later or iPod touch 4th generation or later.
