MenuMeters for El Capitan description and review
This is a port for OS X El Capitan 10.11 from MenuMetros by Alex Harper.
MenuMeters is a set of CPU, memory, disk and network monitoring tools for Mac OS X. Although there are many other programs that do the same thing, none had the set of functions you were looking for. Most were windows located in a corner or on the desk, which are inevitably hidden by document windows on a small laptop screen. Monitors using the menu bar primarily used the NSStatusItem API, which has the annoying tendency of totally reordering my menu bar at every login….
The MenuMeters monitors are true SystemUIServer plugins (also known as Menu Extras). This means that they can be reordered using command-drag and remember their positions in the menu bar through logins and reboots.
– The CPU meter can show the system load as a total percentage or broken down as user and system time. You can also graph the user and system load and display the load as a “thermometer”. The CPU meter menu contains several pieces of information that I like to have with one click.
– The disk activity meter shows disk activity on local system disks (anything that is an IOKit BlockStorage controller). It supports hot plugs and will display activity on FireWire and USB disks as they are mounted. The Disk Meter menu displays volume space details for local drives (it does not display mounted network volumes for performance reasons).
– The memory meter can display the current memory usage as a pie chart, thermometer, historical graph or as used / free totals. The Memory Meter menu displays a breakdown of current memory usage and virtual machine statistics. The Memory Meter can optionally display a paging indicator light.
– The network meter can display network performance as arrows, bytes per second, and / or as a graph.
