Carla description and review
Carla is an audio plugin host, supporting many audio drivers and plugin formats. It has good parameter automation via MIDI CC (and outputs as MIDI as well) and full OSC control.
Carla currently supports the LADSPA (including LRDF), DSSI, LV2, VST2 / 3, and AU plug-in formats, plus support for GIG, SF2, and SFZ files. It uses JACK as the default and preferred audio driver, but it also supports native drivers such as ALSA, DirectSound, or CoreAudio.
There are 4 types of engine processing:
Single client: (JACK controller only) Same as multi-client, except that all JACK ports belong to a single master client. This is necessary when a configuration does not support multi-client JACK applications, such as LADISH. Multi-client: (JACK controller only) Each plugin is exposed as a new JACK client. Audio and MIDI ports are registered as necessary. Rack – Add-ins are processed in order, top to bottom. Plugins with non-stereo audio channels are not supported, but there is a forced stereo option available for mono. Patchbay: Modular patchbay mode, as in JACK Multi-client and many other modular applications. Each plug-in has its own set of canvas and ports that allow you to interconnect the plug-in’s audio and MIDI.
